Conference Home Page

We will spend three weeks of our semester creating and presenting an academic conference. If you do not know what an 'academic conference' is, please do a little research and try to get an idea of the purpose(s) of an academic conference. All of the professors you will be working with during your career at UBC are researchers, UBC is a research institution. And, most of your professors spend some part of their time working on research which they eventually present at academic conferences, and typically their conference papers are then published in scholarly journals. This process is an essential part of academic culture -- indeed, one could consider the academic conference, in anthropological terms, as an integral 'ceremony' of academic culture. Perhaps, as a type of rite of passage -- for research.

The theme of our conference will be:

Digital Literacy

Below is how we will 'organize' our conference. Other then this organizational structure, I will provide little input into the design or presentation of the conference. I will advise you and evaluate your work as collaborators each fully responsible for the organization and content of the conference as well as the 'event' itself. See Conference Assignments for details on how I will evaluate your work.

Conference Schedual:

A note I hope is not necessary: if you miss one of the conference workshop classes, or one of the conference days -- for any reason other than illness or tragedy -- you will loose a set 25% of your grade for each class you miss. This is an exercise in collaboration which requires your full commitment for everyone's benefit. It's also really fun to create a successful and interesting scholarly event. The more energy all of us put into creating this conference of ours, the more fun all of us will have.

Monday Oct. 23rd -----------------------------------------

Everyonewill submit a research question with a brief rational for researching their question on your writely pages.

BEFORE class. We will be looking at your questions in class on Monday. And, bring a printed hard copy with you as well to give to the Conference Organizers.

Please see my notes on how to prepare your research question below.

We will select our Conference Organizers today.

In order to prepare for this, please read the responsibilities of Conference organizers below and if you would like to be an organizer, come to class prepared to discuss which role you would like to fulfill.

Friday Oct. 27th: This is our Quiz class: ------------------

But, the Conference Organizers will have read all of the proposed research questions before today, and selected six for presentation.

This will involve meeting together to read and discuss all the research proposals and come to a consensus as to which research proposals offer the most interesting, exciting and thematically relevant questions to research. You will make your selection before class on Friday.

Monday Oct. 30th: Workshop Class ---------------------------

Documentary Crew begins filming.

This is the first day of our conference workshop. I will show the class a small snip-it of the DVD documentary that students produced last semester -- to inspire you. Our film crew will need some skills with digital editing -- I can teach you the camera skills you will need, if need be. You will need to remind me to book two cameras and two lap tops for this class. An email before Friday will assist me with this -- and I will need you to meet me fifteen mins. before class to help me carry the equipment to class -- or arrange for another organizer to meet me if you are in another class.

Research Groups will come to class with at least two academic research articles, and two other sources for research.

What is an academic research article -- you ask? Please, make sure everyone in your group is clear on what constitutes an 'academic article', sometimes called a 'peer review' article. You learned about this in your library lab. Take out those notes.

You may chose among the following types of other sources: popular sources (ie: magazines, newspapers, literature, popular websites), credible websites (ie: organizations, educational groups, associations, non-profit and humanitarian web sites and other web sites you would deem credible in the sense of 'established'), documentaries, and finally visual art. Bring your research sources on your lap tops, or DVD's, or VRCs, or printed copies. It would be very good if each group has one member with a lap top in class. If you do not have a lap top, and you know you are going to need to spend some workshop time in class, on line -- please let me know a day ahead of time, and I will try to book a lap top. O.K.

Conference Organizers will come to class prepared

to brainstorm and conceptualize the aesthetic of our Conference. You will need to begin by deciding on

* A name for the Conference

* An atmosphere for the Conference -- remember we have a technical director, so let's put this person to work to create an overall atmosphere for our conference (background visuals/ music / a thematic concept for our MC and Key note speaker). Our technical director will also work to encourage the Research Groups to take full advantage of your aesthetic concepts in their presentations.

* Which digital space to use for our Conference Home Page

* A design for the Conference Web space including not only the rhetorical design, but also the components of the space.

* A design for the presentation schedule

And, I will come prepared to talk about presentation skills you will want to learn. I will make you a keynote presentation on Public Speaking. I will present a little of what I have to teach you about presentation and public speaking skills on each of our three workshop days.

Wed. Nov 1st: Workshop Class ------------------------------

We will all be working on our individual tasks, I will be advising on presentation and public speaking again. But, most of this class is yours to collaborate and brainstorm. So, bring all the materials you need to work with.

Fri. Nov. 3rd ----------------------------------------------

Research Groups have completed abstracts, annotated bibliographies and personal bios with photos or images and will submit for Conference Home Page to Conference Organizers in class today.

These submissions need to be typed and should be on your group's home page as well as handed in on paper today -- excluding visual images, these can be accessed from your homepages. But, you must bring the written work because the Conference Organizers will need to work with these in class today, and they are working on an extremely tight schedule. So, be respectful of their schedule.

For these submissions each Research Group will write a 300 - 500 word abstract summarizing your research, an annotated bibliography and a short personal bio. (200 - 300 words) that links your interest in your research with other elements of your academic career. A photo or image that represents your research group. You can not go significantly under or over the word count because the Conference Program design will be in process, your submission will need to fit into the program design template.

Conference Organizers You are responsible for editing and correcting the Research Groups submissions. You are also responsible for collecting these submissions. You will want to contact any group who has not submitted by this deadline and continue to contact them until they do submit.

Conference Organzers have the Conference Home Page up and under construction.

I will want to look at the Homepage and advise during this workshop class.

Research Groups submit detailed technical requirements to the Technical Director.

Technical director books all equipment.

Hard Copy of Conference Program goes to printing

--> or, do we need a hard copy? Maybe we can be clever and figure out a way to 'get around' using all that paper and ink? Hmmmm.

Sunday Nov. 5th --------------------------------------------

Conference Home Page is complete.

Fri.Dec 1st: Documentary Crew presents DVD to class.

Conference Organizers:

Six Groups will be presenting their research, 9 people will work as Conference Organizors, and 2 people will be our documentary team.

The Nine Conference Organizors will include:

Three people responsible for reading and selecting research proposals and for creating a thematic and aesthetic concept for the conference, collaborating and assisting with the design of the Conference Home Page and Program, and keeping in communication with the research presentation groups concerning all deadlines and submissions.

Three people responsible for creating and maintaining the Conference Home Page and making the Conference Program ready for printing and assisting with creating a thematic and aesthetic concept for our Conference.

One person will be our technical director responsible for all technical requirements and helping with creating a thematic and aesthetic concept for our Conference. Our technical director should be both technically adept, creative, and well organized -- everyone depends on this person -- it also helps to have a sense of humour.

One person will be our Host and 'Coordinator' -- who will generally oversee all communications between groups and organizers and introduce all the presentations throughout the conference -- like an MC -- and help with creating a thematic and aesthetic concept for our Conference. Our Conference Host must be able to think on their feet and collect their thoughts quickly, they should have a sense of humour and enjoy speaking in front of a audience. Our Conference Host must also be good at helping the Research Groups feel welcome and at ease before they present. A Conference host also has the most difficult job of timing -- keeping the Conference on time.

And one person will be our "Key Note' speaker and help with creating a thematic and aesthetic concept for our Conference. A key note speaker introduces the intellectual content and theme of the Conference and is the last person to speak on the last day of the Conference. This person must be able to think on their feet and collect and organize their thoughts quickly, they should be comfortable with public speaking, intellectually creative and confident. This is a big responsibility. You will work with the Organizing team and develop a strong overview of all the presentations before the Conference begins.

And, our Documentary Team will consist of two people who will video tape and then edit a 20 minute documentary DVD -- > with the assistance of our technical director. These people need to have some skills with digital editing -- or at the very least be digitally competent in other areas and very eager and keen to learn and willing to work after the conference is over -- in my office with me.
