March 24, 2007: XIaolei: Hey guys, How's weekend so far? I am here to ask if the logo on your site is final, if so , I am going to link it into the group section of our conference page. If not, please send me the logo you want to use at xiaolei.deng@gmail,com   Have a great weekend.

Group research proposal:

The Digital Era and Education: computers in classrooms?

Labbo et al. describe digital literacy as the enhancement of old skills, [and] development of new skills” (Technology and Literacy Education in the Next Century: Exploring the Connection Between Work and Schooling, 1998). We are interested in understanding the adaptation to the digital world required by educators to accommodate the Net Generation.

March 17, 2007: ERIKA : Hi all, will you please link me in as a collaborator on your google doc --> it looks great, but I would like to be able to get in and work along with you. Also, be sure to check my journal page today. Enjoy.

March 11th: Erika here: I have posted a new page in our side bar: 12N Research Proposals, please go there to see which question your group is working with.

Each member of your group now needs to find an article that addresses your question, and continue to follow the instructions for Tuesday:

Once you are happy with an academic article that approaches your research question ----->

a) Make your notes for gist on your journal page.

b) Briefly summarize the article for me, on your journal page.

c) Post your summary on your Group Research Page before Tuesday 's class March 13 th.

March 10th: Your Research proposals:

Ayumi's abstract summary:

According to Yoram Eshet-Alkali and Yair Amichai-Hamburger (2004), effective use of digital literacy requires different types of skills, such as cognitive, motoric <--? , sociological. Recent authors suggest that digital literacy consists five major digital skills:"photo-visual skills", "reproduction skills", "branching skills", "information skills", and "socio-amotional <--? skills". Researchers discover that certain age group performs better in certain digital skills, and that result illuminate the usage of cognitive skills that users perform with digital environment, and "provide educators and software developers with helpful guidelines for designing better user-centered digital environments".

Academic Search Premier. 13 February 2007. http://search.ebscohost.com.  Is there a stable link to this article? I think so, if not copy as a pdf and paste into a new google doc, and link here. Do you know how to do that?

Experiment in Digital Literacy: abstract and pdf

Questions:

1. What exactly is 'Digital Literacy'? Or, perhaps better put: What are the skills required to be digitally literate?

2. How does the usage of digital literacy differs among different people / country? Too broad and not related to your research above.

3. How to  create a better 'user-centered' digital environmet? Interesting, I like the idea of a presentation that presents a set of digital skills.

Research Proposal:

Digital Literacy and its usage

Before starting off with further research, I am not sure what exactly is "Digital Literacy", and therefore, would like to know about it. Also, would like to know how does different type of people (age, job) use it and how can they create a better future "Digital Literacy".

Ellie's Summary:

According to Labbo et al., the traditional concepts of literacy, the ability to read and write print on a page (Venezky, Wagner, and Ciliberti, 1991, cited in Labbo et al.s p.273), are being challenged in the emerging digital economic era. Not only workplaces newly require an enhancement of old skills, development of new skills, and understanding of new digital forms of literacy, but universities also require the digital fluency of students (p.274). Labbo et al. also convey that the notions of functional personal literacy are changing as homes are now equipped with the Internet. However, Labbo et al. are concerned that although computers are present (p.275) in classrooms, they are not in use, and therefore they conclude that educators must learn the key concepts reflecting developing trends and practical applications to transform digital literacy education.

Questions:

1. What are the "notions of functional personal literacy" and how are these notions changing?

2. Why are the computers not in use although they are present in classrooms?

3. What are the "key concepts" of developing trends and practical applications when it comes to transforming digital literacy education?

Ellie's Research Proposal:

The Digital Era and Education: computers in classrooms?

Labbo et al. describe digital literacy as the enhancement of old skills, [and] development of new skills” (Technology and Literacy Education in the Next Century: Exploring the Connection Between Work and Schooling, 1998). I am interested in learning what kinds of old skills are used in developing new skills, and how these new skills are used by educators in classrooms. Also, I am interested in understanding why educators fear using computers even when they are present in classrooms.

ADAPTING YOUR TEACHING TO ACCOMMODATE THE NET GENERATION OF LEARNERS.

Abstract summary:

Skiba and Barton (Adapting Your Teaching To Accommodate The Net Generation Of Learners, 2006) suggest that educators are facing challenges in adapting to the new teaching styles to accommodate the Net Generation or Millennials—learners who have different learning expectations, styles and needs from past students. Skiba and Barton (2006) point out the characteristics of the Net Generation and provide examples of teaching strategies to accommodate the Net Generation in respect to digital literacy, experiential learning, interactivity, and immediacy.

Questions that the abstract leads to me:

  1. It introduces the term “Net Generation” that I would like to explore more of.
  2. The authors suggest examples of teaching strategies to accommodate to the Net Generation—I would like to analyze on these strategies.

Preliminary research questions:

  1. How are the learning expectations, styles and needs of the Net Generation different from the tradition generation?
  2. How can educators adapt to the new teaching styles?
  3. How can the teaching strategies help the educators to adapt to the new teaching styles to accommodate the Net Generation?

English 112 Research Proposal:

Digital Literacy and the Net Generation: Educators’ adaptation to new teaching styles

A connection between digital literacy and the new ways of education is suggested by Skiba and Barton (2006). I would like to research on the challenges of educators’ adaptation of teaching styles to accommodate to the learning expectations and needs of the New Generation of learners, and how can the teaching strategies help the educators overcome the challenges.
